EARTH DAY Wednesday 22 April
Earth Day is observed around the world on April 22. The first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22, 1970, and is considered the birth of the modern environmental movement.
Before 1970, the health of the environment was not a common concern, even as industry poured chemicals and smoke into the air. In 1962, Rachel Carson, an ecologist from Pennsylvania, published a book called Silent Spring. The book became a best seller and raised public awareness of environmental concerns.
After the 1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara, California, Gaylord Nelson, a U.S. senator for Wisconsin, organised a nationwide demonstration against the pollution and the deterioration of the environment.
The protest was held on April 22, 1970.
Approximately twenty million Americans joined the demonstration in support of a healthier and more sustainable treatment of the environment.
Every year on this day we are reminded of the need to look after the earth and make a pledge to follow our school’s Eco Code.

Also at 3pm Armagh Planetarium will premiere a film for the kids called “Zula Patrol: Down to Earth” in celebration of Earth day.
“While on a routine fossil-hunting expedition, The Zula Patrol turns up evidence that the villainous Deliria Delight has been travelling back in time to Earth’s prehistoric past to illegally dump her company’s toxic trash.
The Zula Patrol must find and catch her, before her actions cause catastrophic consequences. In the process, our heroes learn all about the formation and development of Earth, and the life forms who call it home.” Runtime 25mins
Join them at 3pm sharp on their Facebook page when the film will begin at the top of their posts. Follow the link
